Sourdough Starter Update

sourjack.jpg

Now I am on a quest to find sourdough starters from all over. I want to buy one from Alaska and a San Francisco sourdough starter. The more I learn about sourdough, the more I realize this is an addictive hobby :-)

Speaking of addictions…as a Mormon I do not drink alcohol. I’ve been feeling guilty when I stick my nose in the sourdough crock and inhale. Sometimes the alcohol vapors are intense! In sourdough language, it’s called hooch. My starter is producing it quite well. Today my starter is considered fully activated. I fed it a full cup each of milk and flour and a quarter cup of sugar. By Saturday I will be able to make my first sourdough loaf! I tasted the starter tonight and it’s wonderful :-)

  1. Wendy: I recommend Carl Griffith’s 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter. Mr. Griffith, in his lifetime, gave away his starter to whoever would ask for it. The story goes that his ancestors brought it out west with them. When he passed on, his loving friends continued his tradition and will mail you a starter (dried) if you send them a self addressed stamped envelope. Isn’t that cool?
