Power Outage in Florida

power1.gif

“Power was slowly being restored after a massive power outage across Florida Tuesday afternoon. At about 3p.m., three million people were affected.”

Gee…power is on here. It’s hot and humid, so I am VERY grateful for my high power fans. It must be awful to be stuck in a city without A/C and traffic lights :-(

Freedom of Choice

 lushtulips.jpg

“One of God’s greatest gifts to man is freedom of choice. At an early period in the journey through life, man finds himself at a crossroad where he must choose one of two great highways—the right, leading to progress and happiness; and the wrong, leading to retardation and sorrow. There exists this eternal law that each human soul, through the choices he makes, will shape his own destiny. Our success or failure, peace or discontent, happiness or misery, depend on the choices we make each day.”

The cost of bread!

let_them_eat_cake.jpg

Judy asked me yesterday if I would take her to the food pantry today. I woke up with gosh awful gut distress, a fever and supreme dizziness. Ugh. A cold  shower helped.

We shopped in the thrift store. I blew a dollar on a set of two plastic knives, forks and spoons for my 72 hour kit. Then we sat and waited for the interview. You need ID and a Social Security card. You also need to know what money you have coming in and what money you owe. I asked the guy if  other people get such low amounts of food stamps like I do. He said yes, the system is broken and it doesn’t always make sense. I’ll second that!

One great thing about the thrift store is a shopping cart full of bread that’s always free for the taking. I got myself a bag of 5 grain French bread rolls.  I almost fainted when I saw the asking price had been $4.79 for 6 tiny rolls. Do people really pay that? It sure is cheaper to make your own! I love my bread machine :-)

People who depend on food pantries to supplement their food supply learn quickly to frequent several different places. Each pantry offers different kinds of foods. Some are heavy on canned goods, some offer bread and one offers toilet paper, kleenexes, napkins and laundry detergent. In order to get a fairly balanced diet and to try to meet real needs, variety in helping organizations is important. Folks who have been doing this for years have a method.

I am getting an education from following Judy around. It’s not easy being  poor and disabled, but she has learned to cope in some pretty ingenious ways!
