Help needed with right word or definition, please

The year I had the worst congestive heart failure was when I spent 9 days in the hospital on IV diuretics. They put an IV in my arm, a catheter in my bladder and just let me lie there and drain. I ultimately lost around 50 pounds. That took quite a toll on my body, though.

I was put in the congestive heart failure program through the hospital and visiting nurses. It didn’t take long until I up and ran away. I was soooooo sick. I don’t know how I stayed propped up in my van long enough to drive from Vermont to Florida! I threw up and had diarrhea in every state on the way down.

Sitting there driving wasn’t too bad…but the moment I stood up each time, I just wanted to die. My head would make waaooowww….waooowww noises as soon as I stood. It cut off my regular hearing as if someone had their hand on a radio dial, cranking it up, then off over and over again. Does anybody know what I’m talking about? What do you call it? How can I look it up?

This has been happening to me over the last couple of weeks. I feel yucky, but OK when sitting and when I get up, the world goes nuts. I’ve been Googling all sorts of things, but haven’t hit upon the right words yet. Can you help? Thanks :-)

Last night and tonight I spent a lot of time writhing around in pain from cramps. I just woke up from a nap and feel worse. At least I had enough energy to water my plants! I wasn’t able to do that earlier. But…when I went to turn off the faucet, the floor was slippery and I did a split. Now my knee is swollen and my arm is purple ;-(    Arggggghhhhh….

  1. Sounds like some ugly combination of vertigo and tinnitus. I get the vertigo when my blood pressure’s really high or low. The tinnitus (ringing in the ears) comes to me via my ear problem.

  2. I’ve been reading about bad dehydration. I think that’s my problem. The pages I have found mention both vertigo and tinnitus as part of dehydration. After I wrote that, I pinched the top of my hand and the fold stands up a loooong time. I guess after a month of diarrhea, it has gotten to me. I feel sooooooo bad tonight…..

  3. Wendy:

I see you already mentioned dehydration. That seems a likely bet from me given the symptoms you describe.

    PipeTobacco

  4. The more I Googled, the more I think I must be dehydrated. I went to look at myself in the mirror and my eye sockets are considerably sunken in. Gross!

  5. Insufficient blood flow in the inner ear or related areas of the brain can contribute to hearing loss. This can happen as a result of cardiovascular disease, untreated high blood pressure, and other similar conditions. It also may be present in people whose blood tends to sludge and clot excessively (hypercoagulability), or who have too many blood cells (polycythemia).

    OR
    Renovascular hypertension
Usually, high blood pressure causes no symptoms. Occasionally, you may experience a mild headache. If your headache is severe, or if you experience any of the symptoms below, see a doctor right away. These may be a sign of malignant hypertension.

    Tiredness
    Confusion
    Vision changes
    Crushing, angina-like chest pain
    Heart failure
    Blood in urine
    Nosebleed
    Irregular heartbeat
    Ear noise or buzzing

  6. My inability to understand what people are saying has been going on a looooong time. Both in Vermont and Florida I have repeatedly had my hearing tested. They say my hearing is better than normal! The problem is understanding speech. No one has ever given me a concrete reason…they just blame everything on myasthenia or lupus. My mother has the same problem. As kids, she drove us nuts. We got tired of repeating things.

Whenever I am in a meeting, I sit near the front and keep my eye on the speaker. I think I partly read lips. Songs have been hard for me to understand ever since I was a little kid. I thought it was the nature of singing, but it has been explained to me that it’s my hearing ;-p

  7. I really feel for you, Wendy. You have multiple classic symptoms of gluten intolerance and likely multiple food intolerances judging by the multitude of ailments: the autoimmunte diseases, the brain fog, the inability to make sense of conversations, the weakness and fatigue, the digestive and gut issues, etc, etc. It’d be worth doing a food allergy blood panel so you know what foods are actually functioning as poison to your system. There are ones you can order online without needing to go through a doctor, which could be a lot cheaper for you. I really encourage you to look into it.

  8. I’ve been tested for celiac, done elimination diets, etc.

  9. I don’t know how long ago you did the elimination diets or what they were, but if some time has passed it’d be worth doing again.

Celiac tests don’t always show up gluten intolerance. Gluten intolerance doesn’t always lead to Celiac; it can also lead to a host of other ailments and yours fit the profile big time.
