Things and Stuff in the Adirondacks

I love LDS missionaries :-) Two young women came to visit yesterday. The happiness, goodness and influence of the Holy Spirit just seems to exude from every pore. Charlotte wants to get baptized. The missionaries are coming back to give more lessons next week.

I keep getting apartment applications in the mail. I was all psyched up to maybe move to Saranac Lake until I saw the apartments. It’s at least 10 stories high. NO WAY would I move to a place like that!!! I’m trying to get closer to the woods, not totally removed from touching the earth. ICK!

Tomorrow the garage sales start. Star Lake is having a town-wide garage sale on Saturday. Some start Friday.  I’m going to look around for a new Dutch oven. The last two were victims of theft :-( I am also going to keep my eyes open for any camping gear that looks useful and I’d really like a futon or piece of foam for my bed.

Another exciting event on Friday is an all-you-can-eat BBQ at the Wanakena Ranger Station and free music afterwards. I might indulge :-)

My NY insurance starts August 1st! Geeze, NY is light years ahead of FL when it comes to truly helping disabled people. I will be able to fill my prescriptions without interruption. YES!!!!! I’m also looking forward to getting my teeth cleaned and fixed.

Now all I need is a place to live. The apartments around here are back to being my first choice. They are all on one floor and each apartment has 2 doors at ground level. There are only a few apartments in the whole place. It’s pretty ideal compared to the high rise!

It’s also time to get my van inspected and registered in NY. BUT…now I’m a bit hesitant. I need to know I’m really staying in NY before I change them over. I wish I knew if I could get an apartment before the snow flies. If I don’t have one by October, perhaps I should just go to Texas for Heather’s wedding and camp in warm places for the winter. Time will tell…..

Getting to know the Adirondacks better

I have 2 pages in my notebook of towns and their distances from here. I have expanded my apartment search to include all of the Adirondacks and am homing in on the center as a compromise between distance to church and relatives. One town I have in mind is where my brother works and his daughter will be going to college. My sister shops there a few times a month. I’d only be about 10 miles from an LDS ward :-) That is sounding promising. An application is in the mail. The same town as the LDS church also has disabled apartments. That would be another choice.

For now I’ve been searching out free primitive campsites in the Adirondacks. I’ve discovered several especially for disabled folks. As soon as I have enough money for gas maybe I will snag a niece or two and take them camping.

Most of my youth was spent in a different part of the Adirondacks…the Old Forge, Inlet area is where we went most often. But, I’ve been everywhere in the Adirondacks. This is my chance to explore the nooks and crannies.

A home for Wendy?

This is my old two seater outhouse. Wish I had something like that on a little piece of land :-)

Part of me would like a nice compact 16 x 20 ft cabin like I used to live in for 6 years. I prefer being out in the woods near a small pond or stream. But could I keep a wood stove stoked?  Part of me would be happy in a little apartment like the one I’m on the waiting list for. Part of me would like to be a vagabond who moves with the seasons.

It’s hard to keep moving because I need to live in one state for my medical needs. There is a lot that needs taking care of after 2 years of neglect in Florida. The medicines and docs I need are expensive.

I would like to be near family, but that means a struggle getting to church. I’m #6 on the apartment waiting list. I might not even get in this year. Sooooo much to think about and plan for!

I need to do a bunch  of praying and ask for help knowing what I should be doing….

Rats!

I’m going to have to miss church on Sunday. The folks nearby cannot give me a ride and I don’t have enough money or gas. Pretty bad when $20 isn’t enough to get to church and back. I need $15 or $20 more.  I will really miss being able to take sacrament!  The good news is that I will be rich enough next week :-)

Something is going to have to change. I cannot afford $160 to $200/month gas to go to church. I am exploring my options. I could move closer to either Lowville, Lake Placid or Potsdam where there are churches or find a cheaper car or get rides or SOMETHING. Only one Mormon couple live out my way. The woman has relatives in Potsdam so they often do not make straight round trips. They go to the homes of family either before or after church for hours or days. Perhaps I could find other folks within a 20 mile radius so I would only have to drive to their place instead of all the way?

This requires more thought….

Squirrel Tale

Debby Cantlon, who plans to release Finnegan, the young squirrel, back into the wild, bottle-fed the infant squirrel after it was brought to her house.

When Cantlon took in the tiny creature and began caring for him, she found herself with an unlikely nurse’s aide: her pregnant Papillion, Mademoiselle Giselle.

Finnegan was resting in a nest in a cage just days before Giselle was due to deliver her puppies.

Cantlon and her husband watched as the dog dragged the squirrel’s cage twice to her own bedside before she gave birth.

Cantlon was concerned, yet ultimately decided to allow the squirrel out and the inter-species bonding began.

Finnegan rides a puppy mosh pit of sorts, burrowing in for warmth after feeding, eventually working his way beneath his new litter mates.

Two days after giving birth, mama dog Giselle allowed Finnegan to nurse; family photos and a videotape show her encouraging him to suckle alongside her litter of five pups.

Now, Finnegan mostly uses a bottle, but still snuggles with his ’siblings’ in a mosh pit of puppies, rolling atop their bodies, and sinking in deeply for a nap.

Finnegan and his new litter mates, five Papillion puppies, get along together as if they were meant to.

Finnegan naps after feeding alongside his new family.

Finnegan makes himself at home with his new litter mates, nuzzling nose-to-nose for a nap after feeding.

Patience In Adversity

“Tribulation, afflictions, and trials will constantly be with us in our sojourn here in this segment of eternity, just as the Savior said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation.” (John 16:33.) Therefore, the great challenge in this earthly life is not to determine how to escape the afflictions and problems, but rather to carefully prepare ourselves to meet them.”

–Angel Abrea, “Patience in Affliction“, Ensign, May 1992, 25
3 Nephi 9:14

Fun day…

I’ve used a heck of a lot of gas today! Spent the night in Canton and drove to Ogdensberg to switch my Social Security to NY, then back to Canton for another appointment. Then all the way to Watertown to take back my Blackberry. I now need to get a Motorola TracFone as that’s the only thing that will work at Liz’s house. NO cell phones work where I want to move into an apartment. Back  to the dark ages :-)

NY is a zillion times nicer when it comes to homeless people.  When I switched my insurance I had to sign a piece of paper refusing immediate housing! I told her I will be the first in line for a place to live if it gets cold and I still don’t have an apartment!  I had to pick my jaw up off the floor.  Nobody but my church cared if I was homeless in Florida.

I stopped outside of Watertown to buy gas. Used Zeke to walk in and pay and back to the car, then put him in the van. He locked the door with his paw! AND…the  keys were on Zeke’s vest! I tried and tried to reach in far enough, but could only get a hold  of his ears. So….I watched for people with long skinny arms. A guy came in with piercings all over with nice LONG arms. He reached right in and got the keys off Zeke. YAY!!!!! I asked him if anyone had ever wanted him for his arms before and he said yes….he’s a sheetrocker :-)

Now I’m sitting in front of the Nice and Easy snarfing their free wifi. I’m  tired….
