I’ve used a heck of a lot of gas today! Spent the night in Canton and drove to Ogdensberg to switch my Social Security to NY, then back to Canton for another appointment. Then all the way to Watertown to take back my Blackberry. I now need to get a Motorola TracFone as that’s the only thing that will work at Liz’s house. NO cell phones work where I want to move into an apartment. Back to the dark ages
NY is a zillion times nicer when it comes to homeless people. When I switched my insurance I had to sign a piece of paper refusing immediate housing! I told her I will be the first in line for a place to live if it gets cold and I still don’t have an apartment! I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Nobody but my church cared if I was homeless in Florida.
I stopped outside of Watertown to buy gas. Used Zeke to walk in and pay and back to the car, then put him in the van. He locked the door with his paw! AND…the keys were on Zeke’s vest! I tried and tried to reach in far enough, but could only get a hold of his ears. So….I watched for people with long skinny arms. A guy came in with piercings all over with nice LONG arms. He reached right in and got the keys off Zeke. YAY!!!!! I asked him if anyone had ever wanted him for his arms before and he said yes….he’s a sheetrocker
Now I’m sitting in front of the Nice and Easy snarfing their free wifi. I’m tired….

I am confused as to why you consider yourself homeless. Don’t you have your sister’s place to stay till you find a place? Didn’t she say you could stay as long as you want?
Im glad you were able to get your keys. Nice of the guy to help. When does it get really cold there? I hope you get an apartment before then..Well if not, I hope you atleast have a good heater.
Lori
Ummmm….I’m homeless because I have no home. I sleep in my van and have no address of my own. The government considers that homeless…and gee, so do I!
My mother and sister have been kind enough to let me stay in their driveways.
We considered how to make room for me in my sis’s house. She and her husband would have to make the kids share a room and they would have to move upstairs so I could have a room without stairs. It’s always a possibility. I could help them pay expenses. They have also considered buying a house we can all fit in.
The handicap accessible apartment is a cheap and easy solution. The nieces would like it because it’s only a mile from their school and they could visit me.
Well, it seems to me that you like being homeless. You had an apt in Florida and you left there. Your sister has offered for you to stay with her, moving children around is part of being a family. Maybe it isn’t a matter of being a sacrifice for them, but an opportunity to help you. That is if you want the help???
I always wonder and marvel at folks like you, April. I only share a tiny fraction of my life and thoughts on the internet, yet you believe you know enough to make assumptions and judgements. Blows my mind that people do that. I have to know a LOT more before I make comments like that. Gossip, wars, wrecked relationships, etc come from people not bothering to think….
What my sister wants is for me to get my settlement and buy a house big enough for all of us. I left the apt in Florida because I only had a 6 month rent subsidy and it ran out. Rent and utilities were more than I get a month in disability. I could not afford to stay.
Liz wanted me closer so if I had more strokes or hospitalizations, we would all be near each other. She never promised me a place to live. My bro, sis and mother each have their own places here. I don’t even know how my bro and family all fit into their house, it’s even smaller than my sister’s. It was my sister who took me to the apartments to find a place to live.
You are right on one thing….I’d rather be homeless than live in an emergency shelter in the summer here! I’m only concerned about where I will live when the temp drops to freezing. Hopefully I will be in a dwelling by then.
Net 10 phones and Tracfone are the same company, but, Net 10 has much better rates. The Nokia 1600 Net 10 phone is the best deal. If tracfone will work there, i don’t see why net 10 won’t. Regarding homelessness: I don’t believe in the term anymore. God gave us the earth as our home. To me living out of doors is right, living in modern western housing is a form of self worship, most Americans build fancy temples unto themselves, and work too hard to maintain them. Work then becomes a type of worship ritual. I’ve been enjoying watching the mortgage industry implode. Maybe now people will get over having a 2500 square foot home with five TV’s. Soviet communism failed, and we are seeing the beginning of the end of American capitilism. Come quickly Lord……
Ummmm, Doug…what do you live in? Being homeless is pretty darn serious around here when it’s 30 or 40 below zero. Winter lasts for almost half the year here in zone 2/3. Being homeless totally sucked in the Florida summer with temps 90 and over and very high humidity. People with real dwellings have NO IDEA what it’s like to endure weather extremes without a house as a buffer.
I’ve gone from a 2500 square foot home, to a 240 square foot RV, and after i finish selling off everything in storage, plan to live outdoors on the scenic trail systems that criss cross the country, going where the weather suits my clothes. FL in winter, NE in summer. Most “homeless” folk tend to stay in the cities, and one in particular rather than go mobile.
Ahhhhh….so you were talking about yourself! I have never lived in a house or an RV that big. My 1974 RV was 19 ft long and had no working systems inside. My van is a standard size Chevy….minimal conversion…a bed and plastic totes and drawers. I’ve been living on the road half of every year for almost 20 years. When you live on less than $600/month to pay for EVERYTHING, the road can still be fun, but it’s not easy.
Your plan sounds interesting. I hope it works out for you. I followed my daughter for 6 months as she hiked.
You are only thinking about the media’s focus on the homeless. There are a zillion ways to live without a
permanent home. There are many folks who have no fixed dwelling.
