Out of the woods…

Since Sunday I have been camped at Aldrich Wild Forest. It butts up against the 5 Pond Wilderness area. Seems like a long way in, but it’s just 4 miles on a dirt road. I’ve been the only one camping there all week and suddenly 2 trailers and another group of three families in 3 cars showed up. I left. It had been sooooooo peaceful there :-)

Got a doc appointment Friday, so figured I should come out of the woods and get cleaned up for it. I’ve tried real hard to stay put a week at a time because my front brakes are in tough shape. A mechanic I was camped next to in the High Peaks area looked at the brakes and said I need it redone. Guess where September’s $$ is going?

Like a dummy, I forgot to bring a gallon of gas for my generator.  I had to go all week without my CPAP machine. I’ve never done that before! I will be glad to get recharged and get a good night’s sleep tonight :-)

Zeke and Aleka love the primitive campsites we’ve been staying at. They both find plenty to look at and listen to in the woods. We found coyote poop near our campsite and saw two big piles of bear poop on the road when we left. It hadn’t been there before. Looked full of berry seeds. The coyote poop was full of fur.

Oh, many leaves are turning red and orange. The swamp maples are blazing red. Winter will soon be here!

Brrrrrrr….

Tomorrow’s forecast for where I’m camping is 56 degrees for a high and 36 degrees for a low. Very weird since today is the hottest it has been in a looooong time. It’s 78 degrees at the moment.

I was going to stay put at the campsite I was at, but the forecast today was for 80% chance of thunderstorms with rain all day….so I came to the library.  Maybe I should just ignore the forecasts? They are rarely right or even close ;-p

Today I am in Saranac Lake

Sunday I went to LDS church in Lake Placid. It’s the teeniest building and branch I have ever seen! Maybe 30 people. It’s right near John Brown’s farm.

Last night I camped at Jones Pond. Free campsites with beautiful views of the lake. There was a loon out front, a bunch of ducks and a wayward seagull. I picked about a cup of wild blueberries and it about did me in! My legs are sure wobbly.

I visited the Visitor Center run by Paul Smiths and NYS. Got some maps. I could camp for free the rest of my life with all these great spots. It’s getting cold, though. One night was about 40 degrees.

I’m in the Saranac Library snarfing up wifi. Next I’m going to go look at places for rent around here. There was a woman in church who lives at a Senior/Disabled complex that sounded fantastic! I’m going to look into it. The DeChantal Apartments have openings, but it looks horrid and is many stories high. At this point I’d rather live in a ditch than there.

A ditch might start looking good. My van is falling apart. Sunday something bad happened to the brakes. I need to get them looked at. There’s an intermittent grinding noise and it squeaks.

The guy who sold me the van said he took off the choke. I HOPE that’s what was wrong this morning. The accelerator kept getting stuck on revving a bazillion times a second. Now that temps have warmed, it’s fine.

Geeze…living and driving the same thing is scary when you are down to no money for the rest of the month and the van needs fixing! How come the month is soooooo long?

Well…wish me luck on the home search and prayers that my van holds together greatly appreciated. Thanks :-)

Today I’m in Long Lake

I’ve been boondocking in some gorgeous places the last few days. Now I’m at the public library getting blazing fast wifi :-)

Yesterday Zeke and I went out in a pontoon boat and got to see a mother loon and her two babies. There were also several osprey nests around the lake. I’ve written long diary entries about the last few days and will transfer them to the computer sometime this week.

The weather is PERFECT for me…clouds and cool with sunshine from time to time. Last night was in the 40’s.

I’m going off into the sunset for a while. I’ll be camping and enjoying the Adirondacks now before it gets too cold. It’s supposed to be in the 40’s here tonight! Fall is coming fast.

I might go to towns or I might not. If you don’t see any blog entries, you will know I’m out in the boonies :-)

Thinking about men again

The 3 month marriage I was in did more to shatter me than any other relationship I have ever been part of. Ironically, I can hardly remember the guy. It has been more than 2 years since that relationship ended. I find myself looking at men with interest again. That’s a heck of a thing when I am up here in the Adirondacks. Mormons are scarce. Single Mormon men who I would like that would also would like me are probably one in a bazillion. Sigh…

Perhaps I need to put up a boyfriend application page like Heather had :-)

Know any nice Mormon men you could introduce me to?

At this point in my life I am VERY flexible about where I will live. My daughter is  in Texas and getting married and all the rest of my relatives are in NY…..

It’s fun to think about what twists and turns my life could take depending on who I meet. I’d be happy in almost any place as long as my spouse liked camping sometimes :-)

Faith in Jesus Christ

“To have faith in Jesus Christ means to have such trust in him that we obey whatever he commands. There is no faith where there is no obedience. Faith comes from hearing the word of God and is a spiritual gift. Faith increases when we not only hear, but act on the word of God as well, in obedience to the truths we have been taught.”

SOS

It’s amazing to me that you can take this little bundle of dried up meat and make a good dinner for 5 hungry people with it!

For those who don’t call it SOS, the dish is also known as creamed chipped beef on toast. Here’s how to make it into a yummy dinner…

1 package of dried beef, 1 stick of butter, 1/2 cup flour, LOTS of freshly ground pepper, a few dashes of hot sauce and I used Everglades seasoning…any seasoned or plain salt will do.

In a big cast iron pan, melt butter on low. Turn up the heat and whisk in flour and seasonings to taste. Keep whisking until it starts to turn brown. Slowly but steadily whisk in 4 cans of evaporated milk. Add finely chopped meat. Whisk like crazy until it comes to a boil. Serve over toast.
