Was the lemon juice on sale, or do you actually use that amount in a month? Do you have 99CentOnly stores there? They have great deals on produce, you just have to be there at the right time. I got 2-3 pounds of fresh ginger for a buck, 2 heads of cauliflower and brociflower for a buck. I blanched them and froze them. Our “Dollar Tree” store recently started carrying bread/rolls/ etc, they are delivered on Tues mid morning and are gone by that evening. The bread outlets are a good place to stop by, too. I’m sure you know all this, though. I didn’t realize you were so close to Lake Placid – I was born near there! ~~Kath~~
Well it’s not much, but it’s better than what much of the world gets to eat.
I bought a case because it was the thing I most often ran out of. Each month I try to stock up on something. Pretty much the only things I drink are lemonade and hot chocolate.
Dollar Tree is where I buy $1 food. They have NOTHING fresh. All produce around here is very expensive. I buy bags of frozen vegies and pour out what I need. I make my own bread, muffins and cornbread. I really ought to get back to making my own English muffins and bagels. I don’t know of any bakery outlets in Saranac Lake or Lake Placid.
Have you been back to Lake Placid in a while? It’s a town full of rich people and very expensive and trendy shops. Saranac Lake is a mix of tourists, college students, rich folks, middle class and the poor. Aldi and Dollar Tree are the only places I can afford to shop. When in Tupper Lake, I go to Sav-A-Lot. Walmarts are 40+ miles from here in Malone and Plattsburg.
Leslie…that’s called jumping to conclusions. Do you know what’s in my cupboards and fridge? What I buy is stuff to fill in the gaps and make meals with what I already have on hand. I never said I couldn’t afford fresh foods.
This month two people have given me some food they claimed they didn’t want, plus I went to a food shelf at the end of last month.
I combine what I have with what I’m given and what I buy. I’m trying to chronicle what it’s like to live on a budget.
While you were writing that, I was working on my pantry list. I cleaned out my shelves, wrote everything down and put it all back in using a better classification system.
I do not buy each month exactly what I’m eating each month. I have always bought for the pantry, then created from there.
Nice post.
You can also save money by shopping at the right stores. Restaurant Depot is one of my favorites for cutting my grocery bills in half.
If you don’t know about Restaurant Depot go to their website or check out http://sillenivek.blogspot.com/2008/11/half-off-food-and-groceries.html
No, I haven’t been back to Plattsburgh – left when I was about 18 months old. My dad was stationed there. When I was in college he got stationed there again, but I never got to go and visit him. I think it’s be too cold for me now – I’ve lived in Phoenix too long – and the southern states most of my life since we left Plattsburgh. ~~Kath~~
I miss rotisserie chicken! Once a month I would buy one at Sam’s Club. I always shared mine with Rhett, so it didn’t last long!
$100…not bad for a month
