More depressing stuff

As I get to know the area and the people, I’m discovering the difference between the rich and the poor here in Arizona. The divide looks bigger to me than I’m used to.

Rhett and I get $511/month each to live on. Turns out we are considered “rich” compared to families on welfare. There seems to be a lot of unemployment and underemployment here. Some people are beyond discouraged. As I go to garage sales and thrift shops, I hear stories.

We are near the edge of the San Carlos Apache Reservation. When we drove through on our way to Phoenix and back, I noticed lots of burned down buildings. Just this week I’ve heard of 2 places burning to the ground there, with multiple fatalities :-(

Then I watched this video yesterday. It made it sink in even deeper. Sobering.

BBC video on the poor in America.

Wow. People who have “enough” do not understand at all. Living in this senior apartment, my eyes are open even more. Most of the poor folks I meet are not lazy and unwilling to work, they have medical or mental or other issues. Most need help to survive at all. The safety net has HUGE holes. So sad :-(
